Needs Analysis Interview Example:
The end user’s need is to keep the sales staff informed. The need is communication, not technology. The technology serves to communicate, but the questions should be centered on the need and the client’s processes. These questions should be opened ended – it’s a discovery process.
QUESTIONS FOR END USERS:
1. What exactly are you communicating – is it voice, content or both?
a. If content, what kind of content? (Informing them of what?
b. Sales forecasts, marketing materials or are you doing product training)?
2. With how many people are you communicating?
3. Where are they located – one location or multiple locations?
4. If some are remote, what devices are they using to communicate on?
5. How many people total?
6. Do you see that number of people increasing in time, say, over the next five years?
7. Is most of the communication one way or is it more interactive?
8. What do you like about the way you communicate now?
9. What do you not like about the way you communicate now?
10. If you could change how you communicate, what would that look like?
11. What is the skill level of the end users?

QUESTIONS FOR OWNERS/OTHER STAKEHOLDERS:
1. Have you already budgeted for this project?
*This avoids asking the dreaded question, “How much money do you have?” It may be thought that by revealing the budget the designer will “up-specify” the audiovisual facilities to use all the available funds. If the budget isn’t adequate, you’ll either need to adjust the budgetary expectations or the end users’ expectations.
2. When is this project expected to be completed?
3. What corporate technologies and standards exist currently?
