For our December ‘25 Xchange Community Spotlight, we’re featuring @Mike Ross, Creative Technical Director at Blue Alchemy Labs, who is based in Australia. His journey into the world of AV started in the theatre, where he specialized in technical design and lighting.

“After several years in that world, I transitioned into the events AV industry,” he said. “That’s where I really learned the full breadth of the AV trade – everything from live events and staging to the nuts and bolts of audio, video, and lighting systems.”

With time, he moved into designing and installing themed attractions and immersive environments, combining his passion for storytelling with his technical know-how. Now, at Blue Alchemy Labs, his workdays are a dynamic blend of creative strategy, hands-on technical work, and project leadership.

“In the morning, I might be sketching out new concepts or storyboards. Later, I’ll review technical drawings, collaborate with partners, or problem-solve on-site or remotely with contractors. A big part of my role is ensuring that every technical detail serves the greater creative vision and delivers a seamless guest experience.”

Success in his role hinges on several core skills like creative thinking, technical expertise, and adaptability.

“Juggling multiple projects, shifting priorities, and guiding teams through complex installations all come with the territory. Ultimately, it’s about bridging the gap between imagination and technical reality to bring unique experiences to life,” he said.

Two recent projects that have had a major impact on his approach and perspective include being a part of the team for the Sphere in Las Vegas and leading the creative direction and experience design for the Storm Pool at Tria Spa, MGM Macau.

“Being part of the team for the Sphere in Las Vegas was a career milestone. The ambition and technical complexity of that project really pushed me to think bigger and collaborate in new ways. Equally, leading the creative direction and experience design for the Storm Pool at Tria Spa was a standout moment. We developed the vision and emotional flow for this immersive feature, crafting multi-sensory, story-driven moments using light, sound, water, and media. We made sure every detail supported the spa’s philosophy of immersive wellness.”

When it comes to AV trends, he pointed out that trends once centered largely on immersive environments integrating large-format displays, spatial audio, and interactive elements. But what’s really emerging now is the use of digital twins and AI.

“Digital twins let us create detailed, real-time virtual models of physical spaces, making everything from design and testing to ongoing management much more precise and efficient. At the same time, AI is being used to automate content generation, system monitoring, and to deliver more personalized, adaptive guest experiences.”

He also expressed that “while these technologies are powerful, their real impact comes from how thoughtfully they’re integrated to support the story and enhance the guest experience.”

On Xchange, Mike often shares many of his insights on creating immersive experiences, writing articles on topics such as theme parks and the art of immersion, projection mapping fundamentals, and more. What he enjoys most about the platform is the sense of community it brings and the continuous learning it fosters.

“It’s a great space for sharing insights, learning from others, and staying inspired by new trends,” he said.
