LetsTalkAVbyAlexis Series: Episode 6:Designing a Successful Auditorium: Where Acoustics, Technology and Intent Converge
During a recent trip through the airport, I noticed how many different types of digital signage screens were around me and realized that not everyone knows what they’re actually called or how they work.
If you've ever wondered about those glowing displays showing flights, gates and baggage info, here's a quick breakdown in a simple way:
1.FIDS – Flight Information Display System:
The "main screen" everyone checks. These show real-time updates on arrival/departure times, gates, delays and cancellations. FIDS pull data from various sources of airlines, air traffic control, weather systems and more ; to give passengers up-to-the-second info.
**Key features:
• Real-time flight status.
• Gate changes and delay alerts.
• Multilingual display.
• Integration with mobile apps & websites.
2.BIDS – Baggage Information Display System:
Ever stood at baggage claim wondering where your suitcase is? That’s where BIDS comes in—showing which carousel your luggage will arrive on, estimated delivery time and special notifications for oversized or delayed bags.
**Helps with:
• Avoiding confusion at baggage carousels.
• Reducing stress for arriving passengers.
• Improving flow in arrival areas.
3.GIDS – Gate Information Display System:
These are the screens at your boarding gate, showing everything from boarding times and group numbers to destination weather and aircraft type. They help make boarding more efficient—and less chaotic.
**Typical info displayed:
• Flight and gate info.
• Boarding group updates.
• Seat upgrades and connecting flights.
• Destination weather.
4. Wayfinding & Interactive Displays:
In addition to FIDS, BIDS and GIDS, many airports now use touchscreen kiosks, smart digital directories and dynamic overhead signage to help travelers navigate terminals with ease.
**Think:
• Touch-based maps.
• Walking directions to gates & shops.
• Real-time crowd management.
• Turn-by-turn navigation.
5. Behind the Scenes:
All these systems are powered by data from sources like:
• Airport Operational Database (AODB).
• Air traffic control systems.
• Weather & public transport feeds.
• Airline operation centers.
They’re integrated into a single digital ecosystem, keeping every screen across the airport updated in real-time.
6. Why It Matters:
These systems aren't just helpful, they're essential. They:
• Improve airport efficiency.
• Reduce staff workload.
• Enhance passenger satisfaction.
• Increase revenue from ads and concessions.
Finally, What’s Next?
The future of airport digital signage might include in near future:
• AI-powered predictive displays.
• Augmented reality navigation.
• Biometric & voice-activated systems.
So next time you're in an airport and see a flight update or carousel number pop up, you'll know: it's not just a screen it's part of a massive, real-time tech network working behind the scenes to keep passengers moving smoothly.
