L’illa Diagonal celebrated the completion of its comprehensive renovation in grand style with a three-day public festival, held from September 18 to 20. The program included free circus performances such as aerial dances, juggling, and tightrope walking. After more than two years of work, the shopping center—one of Barcelona’s most iconic landmarks and the first built in the city back in 1993—fully renovated its facilities and the Sant Joan de Déu Gardens, with an investment of €32 million.

To mark this new stage, the celebration featured a blend of circus shows, live music, games, and dance performances, offering visitors a modern, surprising, and comfortable leisure experience. Among the most memorable moments was a tightrope walker crossing more than 60 meters over the gardens, 20 meters above the ground, leaving the audience in awe. The event highlighted how the renovation not only modernizes the center’s spaces but also introduces new ways of enjoying shopping, leisure, and entertainment

Expansion of lighting and immersive experiences

The renovation also included the expansion and modernization of digital lighting across various areas of the center, such as the ceiling and the marquee. This upgrade combined technology and artistic design to create warmer, visually striking environments that heightened visitors’ sensory experience.

Interactive lighting: a ceiling that comes alive with every movement

During the celebration, L’Illa Diagonal’s ceiling transformed into a dynamic canvas that reacted to visitors’ every movement, delivering a completely unique and participatory experience. Through touchscreens located at strategic points in the corridor, users could control the lights and create real-time compositions: from shapes and patterns to ascending and descending movements, generating a journey full of color and emotion.

L’Illa Diagonal’s immersive ceiling took innovation to the next level thanks to an application designed and developed by Lumalia Studio, which turned it into a real-time interactive canvas. Visitors were able to take control of the content, moving the ceiling area as if it were a canvas and “painting” with shapes and patterns as they walked through the space. The application allowed them to adjust speed, size, intensity, and color, as well as activate figurative content such as fish, sharks, or immersive skies, offering a real-time, fully immersive experience. This playful concept transformed the ceiling’s lighting into a medium of participation, expression, and communication, where each visitor’s creation was instantly displayed—turning the ceiling into a living centerpiece of the shopping center.

A shared experience of interaction and creativity at L’Illa Diagonal.

Throughout the weekend, several areas of the shopping center and the park hosted free activities that strengthened L’Illa Diagonal’s connection with the community, combining entertainment, culture, and technology. Visitors also captured their creations and favorite moments with the interactive lighting game, sharing them on social media and building a community around innovation and creativity. This event stood out not only for its spectacle but also for showing how lighting and technology can transform urban spaces, creating sensory and participatory experiences for all audiences.
