The AV industry is undergoing a dramatic shift in regards to hiring and retaining talent. As many people are coming into the industry for the first time, some are still unaware of the opportunities for growth within the AV community. As an AV pro, it’s crucial to develop skills that can help you advance and drive success in your career. Here are few tips and best practices to build and maintain a thriving career in AV.

  1. Identify your areas of interest and expertise and become proficient in those areas

The AV industry comprises various areas of expertise, including installation, audio engineering, lighting design, marketing, sales and many others. To succeed in the industry, identify your areas of interest and develop specific skill sets in those areas. For example, if you’re interested in the engineering or product development side of the business, leverage the incredible resources and training from organizations like AVIXA. They are especially helpful when it comes to understanding concepts like signal flow, power, and installation standards. On the other hand, if you’re interested in audio engineering, specialize in skills like studio recording, mixing, and live sound.

To develop your expertise, attend industry events, seminars, and conferences to keep up with the latest trends and technologies. You can also gain practical experience by collaborating with other professionals in your field.

  1. Apply for the roles that match your desired job function

When applying for a job in AV, it’s essential to focus on the function of the job, not just the job title. Job titles can be misleading, and they don’t always reflect the actual duties and responsibilities of the job. Instead, focus on the specific skills and expertise required for the role. Be open to different opportunities that match your skillset, even if it’s not the exact job title you were hoping for.

When applying for a job, tailor your resume and cover letter to the specific role and highlight your relevant experience and skills. Additionally, obtaining certifications in your area of expertise can also help you demonstrate your proficiency to potential employers.

  1. Work for companies that align with your vision.

Working for a company that aligns with your values and vision can help you feel fulfilled in your AV career. Look for companies that prioritize employee development, offer opportunities for growth and advancement, and have a positive company culture. Working for a company that shares your vision can help you stay motivated and engaged in your work, leading to a thriving career in AV.

If you’re not currently working for a company that aligns with your vision, evaluate whether it’s somewhere you’d like to invest in long term or consider making a change. To avoid consistent job hopping, research potential employers ahead of time to ensure that their values and culture match your own.

Great advice Ben, thanks for posting this. You make some great points that are valid for both people rising up in their careers at early and mid-stages, and others looking at the AV industry from other industries.  There is indeed a wealth of great content to leverage out there. Much of it is available free or very low cost. It is good to think about building both a broad base of knowledge and also more advanced information around your desired path.  At some point you will find you are able to help others along their paths and that is what the AV industry is all about.
