¿Es posible ver los desechos electrónicos como una oportunidad para innovar? ¿Es posible incluso pensar en dejar de producir tantos desechos? Alrededor del mundo se están creando diferentes iniciativas que permiten utilizar los desechos electrónicos para darles una segunda vida o como fuente de materia primas para dejar de sacar estos materiales de los recursos naturales de nuestro planeta.
Desde utilizar páneles que ya no son “productivos“ en las granjas solares pero que funcionan perfectamente en una casa, hasta crear celulares y computadores que no necesitan ser reemplazados sino reparados, los desechos electrónicos nos presentan una oportunidad de innovación y de generar nuevos negocios. La creatividad de los emprendedores que están haciendo estas propuestas no tiene límite y la oportunidad de hacer empresa, mientras se alarga la vida útil de los equipos, o se recuperan los materiales, es infinita.

La pregunta que viene a mi cabeza después de ver este documental es: ¿Es posible pensar en equipos que en vez de ser reemplazados sean actualizados o que solo necesiten pequeños cambios para hacer en sitio? ¿Ven los productores una oportunidad al reparar en cada país los daños de un equipo en vez de enviarlo a otro continente para que sea revisado, destruido y reemplazado, disminuyendo así la huella de carbono de cada garantía? ¿Qué pasa con las materias primas de todos los equipos que son destruidos? ¿Cuál es la oportunidad que nos estamos perdiendo detrás de todo esto?

Si bien es claro que la obsolescencia y el cambio de tecnología es cada vez más rápido, también es claro que las próximas generaciones tienen más conciencia en temas de cuidado del planeta y uso responsable de los recursos, hemos pensado cómo será el consumidor del futuro y si estará dispuesto a comprar equipos sabiendo que estos son destruidos y enviados a un relleno sanitario o como basura a otro país?

Como Integradores debemos estar preparados para entender estas nuevas generaciones y nuevos hábitos de consumo para que no nos cojan fuera de base, ¿cómo lo estamos haciendo? Estoy segura de quienes resuelvan esta pregunta van a crear un mercado que generará muchos negocios, mientras promete dejar un planeta para las generaciones futuras.

¿Is it possible to see electronic waste as an opportunity to innovate? ¿Is it possible to even think about stopping producing so much waste? Around the world, different initiatives that allow electronic waste to be used with a second life or as a source of raw materials to stop removing these materials from the natural resources of our planet, are being created.

From using panels that are no longer “productive” in solar farms but that work perfectly in a home, to creating cellphones and computers that do not need to be replaced but rather repaired, electronic waste presents us with an opportunity for innovation and generating new businesses. The creativity of the entrepreneurs who are making these proposals has no limit and the opportunity to start a business, while extending the useful life of the equipment, or recovering the materials, is infinite.

The question that comes to mind after watching this documentary is: ¿Is it possible to think of equipment that, instead of being replaced, be updated or that only needs small changes to be made on site? ¿Do producers see an opportunity in repairing damage equipment in each country instead of sending it to another continent to be reviewed, destroyed and replaced, while reducing the carbon footprint of each warranty? ¿What happens to the raw materials of all the equipment that are destroyed? ¿What is the opportunity we are missing behind all this?

Although it is clear that obsolescence and the change in technology is increasingly rapid, it is also clear that the next generations are more aware of issues of caring for the planet and responsible use of resources. ¿Have we thought about what the consumer of the future will be like, and if will be willing to buy equipment knowing that it will be destroyed and sent to a landfill or as garbage to another country?
As Integrators we must be prepared to understand these new generations and new consumer habits so that they don't catch us out off base, ¿how are we doing it? I am sure that those who solve this question will create a market that will generate a lot of business, while promising to leave a planet for future generations.
