 Calling all Video System Designers!

When it comes to selecting the most suitable display technology, what factors do you find crucial?
Is it the viewing distance, content resolution, processors, or something else entirely?

Let's explore some essential insights and considerations for designing effective video systems.

  • Display Selection: Carefully consider the requirements of the space and the content to be displayed when choosing the appropriate display technology. LED video walls, LCD or OLED displays, projection systems, or interactive touchscreens may be suitable options. Take into account factors like viewing distance, ambient lighting conditions, content resolution, and budgetary constraints.

  • Resolution and Aspect Ratio: Ensure that the chosen resolution and aspect ratio align with the video content and viewing distance. Popular resolutions include Full HD (1080p), Ultra HD (4K), and even higher resolutions like 8K. Compatibility with the content source and support from the video distribution infrastructure are essential considerations.

  • Video Processing and Scaling: Employ video processors and scalers to handle various video formats, resolutions, and aspect ratios. These devices ensure accurate scaling and optimization of video signals for the displays. Additional features like video wall processing, image enhancement, and color calibration may also be available.

  • Video Distribution: Determine the most suitable method for distributing video signals from the source to the displays. Technologies such as HDMI, DisplayPort, SDI (Serial Digital Interface), or AV over IP solutions can be considered. Factors like signal quality, distance limitations, scalability, and ease of control should guide your selection.

  • Signal Extension and Switching: For larger installations or long cable runs, signal extension devices and switches may be necessary. These devices enable video signals to be transmitted over extended distances without degradation and facilitate flexible routing of video sources to different displays or zones.

  • Video Conferencing and Collaboration: If your AV system includes video conferencing capabilities, integrate video conferencing codecs, cameras, and microphones. Ensure compatibility with popular video conferencing platforms and standards like SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) or H.323.

  • Control and User Interface: Design a user-friendly control system that allows users to switch between video sources, adjust display settings, and control other video-related functions. Control panels, touchscreens, or centralized control software can facilitate seamless operation.

  • Content Management and Distribution: Consider implementing a content management system to efficiently manage and distribute video content across multiple displays or zones. This system can include features such as scheduling, content playback, and remote management of content sources.

  • Integration with Room Acoustics: Take into account the acoustic characteristics of the space where the video system will be installed. Consider factors such as room size, shape, and materials used in the construction. Proper acoustic treatments, including sound-absorbing panels or diffusers, can enhance the audio quality and overall user experience.

Finally, familiarize yourself with industry standards and guidelines related to video systems, such as SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) standards, HDMI specifications, or HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) requirements. Adhering to these you can refer always to AVIXA standards to ensures compatibility, interoperability, and compliance with quality and copyright protection standards.

Dear Alexis. Thanks for the post.

You wrote most of aspects. I think, at first viewing distance and type of content are important. Then we can go through the points that you mentioned above.

Thanks for having time reviewing my Post !

Viewing Distance and type of content are important factors as well !
