Over the last few years, there has been a focus on empathy and kindness in the workplace, which is great.  BUT... experts warn in this article from CNBC that this positive approach is leading, in some cases, to toxic environments whereby difficult subjects and negative feedback are avoided.

At AVIXA, we conducted a training session for managers a couple of years ago about effective performance management and communication, and one phrase that was used in the training that stuck with me from Brene Brown, leadership author, is "Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind." As professional leaders, we need to ensure that confrontation and conversation, when warranted, is respectful and honest, and that the organizational culture reflects a safe space to talk about both strengths and weaknesses, paving the way for professional growth and development and an environment that truly cares about its employees enough to have the hard conversations, too.
