Dark Matter: Mercer Labs’ Terrifying Immersive Art Exhibit
If you’ve ever been to a traditional haunted house and scoffed at its hokiness, I might have the properly scary event for you.
Mercer Labs, an AV experience in Manhattan, has created a unique Halloween experience that skips the rattling skeletons and goes straight for your psyche. Experimental artist Roy Nachum, the co-founder and creative director at Mercer, was inspired by his own nightmares when creating the Dark Matter exhibit. Lucky for us, he has transposed the most unsettling audiovisual narratives from his dreams into a truly haunting show.
The theme of the exhibit is centered around darkness, and through the use of audio installations, interactive displays, and immersive visual haunts, you’ll be plunged into the depths of the human psyche. "Nightmares are manifested fears, where the subconscious grapples with panic, uncertainty and the unknown, a universal phenomenon we share as humans,” Nachum told Time Out.
The show is also heavily influenced by the paranormal, but not the flowy sheet kind. It uses multi-sensory installations that are designed to be eerily unsettling — think inner demons, solitude and darkness, and facing your ultimate fears. If this isn’t reason enough to check it out, the technology used is also very impressive. Nachum has employed 8K projections and high-tech robotics to make his nightmares come alive. “[The nightmare is] inviting visitors to confront their fears, explore darkness and to understand how darkness has shaped art, culture and the human experience," says Nachum.
The experience has a rating of PG-13 and you can expect to spend anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half wandering around the 36,000-square-foot museum. It only runs through the end of October, however, so definitely get your tickets now! Once the Dark Matter show ends, you can still head to Mercer Labs for their “Limitless” exhibit.
