AV Standards for Educational Film Rooms & Seminar Rooms
Consider, is it possible to develop a checklist for a film room or a seminar room that contains the detailed steps 1,2,3,4... that, if put in the hands of typical planner or architect would allow them to make correct decisions on screen positions, chair layouts, row tiering and even less frequent needs such as determining the height of a teleprompter monitor on the back wall of a seminar room?
The list below is pretty routine stuff and might just be a smattering, or a taste of what it would take to develop AV Standards with sufficient info and graphical representations to address all of the issues that would have to be considered to empower a space planner, unless someone out there has already been through this exercise:
How does one determine if the configuration/dimensions of a room are suitable to be used as a film room or a seminar room?
How does one calculate film screen or monitor size relative to the room size?
What is the exact film screen or monitor position on the wall, distance to bottom of screen, height of mid-screen?
How large of a room can be serviced by a single central screen, and when does the use of additional sides screens come into use?
With a podium in place, flat floor and looking at optimizing audience sight lines from all the chairs in the room, and also taking into account the view from the front row—how high should that screen be?
Is there a maximum allowable ceiling height above the screen?
How many chairs can fit in the room to max it out and what should be the arrangement of their positions, relative to the monitor or screen?
How close would the first row of chairs be to the screen for proper viewing, based on not exceeding recommended vertical viewing angles?
What is the farthest distance back you could put a row of seats and still expect the audience to see the screen?
What are the recommended chair seat heights to allow optimum viewing (tiered for film rooms, non-tiered for seminar rooms)
What are the suggested general room light levels (normal, during film playback, during seminar speaking)
Where do you place the light on the seminar leader so it doesn’t hit the screen and what is the suggested key light level for this?
If a projector is used, what is the optimum projector installation position?
For a teleprompter monitor in the back of the room, at what height should it be mounted?
