Why Frequencies Matter in AV

From stage microphones to boardroom conferencing systems, wireless devices play a key role in delivering seamless AV experiences. These devices rely on specific parts of the radio frequency spectrum, which are regulated by national authorities such as CST in Saudi Arabia.

To put it simply, the frequency spectrum works like a multi-lane highway. Each wireless device needs its own lane to operate smoothly. When part of that highway is reassigned, like making room for 5G existing users need to adjust or risk interference.

What’s Changing in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Arabia recently wrapped up a major spectrum auction, allocating the 600 MHz, 700 MHz, and 3800 MHz bands to mobile telecom operators to support expanding 5G networks.

That means if you’re using wireless audio systems, like microphones or in-ear monitors, that operate in the 614–698 MHz range, your equipment will soon fall outside the permitted range.

The use of that band for wireless AV is being phased out and will be prohibited by CST.

This shift supports the country’s broader digital transformation goals, but it also means many in the AV world will need to adapt.

How Will This Impact Your AV Systems?

If you’re using wireless devices that operate in the 614–698 MHz range, you may start noticing:

  • Signal interference caused by mobile networks.
  • Non-compliance with updated CST frequency regulations.
  • Limitations on equipment use, requiring upgrades or retuning.

What You Can Do Right Now

    • Check your gear: Most wireless systems list their frequency range on the device or in the manual. Double-check if you’re using anything in the 614–698 MHz range.

    • Use trade-in programs: SHURE, for instance, has launched a trade-in offer. If you’re using older systems in the now restricted band, from any accepted Brands like Shure, Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, Revolabs/Yamaha, AKG, Beyer Dynamic, JTS, MiPro, Audix, ClearOne,  you might be able to swap them for newer, compliant models at a discounted price.
