Electronic waste is growing at an unprecedented rate, driven by rapid technology consumption and the short lifespan of many devices. Latin America is no exception. According to the Regional E-Waste Monitor for Latin America, published by the UN’s SCYCLE programme, e-waste in 13 countries across the region increased by 49% from 2010 to 2019, reaching 1.3 million tonnes in 2019. Alarmingly, only 2.7% of this waste was properly managed, far below the global average of 17.4%. The remaining 97% is either handled informally or discarded without proper treatment, posing serious environmental and health risks.

The region faces an urgent challenge: strengthening recycling infrastructure, improving regulatory frameworks, and, most importantly, shifting the cultural mindset around how we value and manage technology at the end of its lifecycle.

An Industry with Transformative Potential

In this context, those of us in the audiovisual ecosystem have a significant role to play. From manufacturers and importers to integrators, distributors, and end users, we all participate in the cycle.

A crucial step is adopting the principle of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which means that those who produce, sell, or install technology should also play an active role in its reuse, recycling, or safe disposal.

But beyond regulations, real change occurs when we act out of conviction—by promoting more sustainable practices in our projects, offering responsible alternatives to our clients, and supporting initiatives that are already making a difference.

Actions That Inspire

The good news is that many ideas are already being implemented, proving that change is possible. Here are some of them:

  • Partnerships with certified recyclers: More companies in the tech and AV sectors are collaborating with certified recyclers to ensure safe and traceable e-waste treatment.

  • Donation programs to give equipment a second life: Initiatives like SAVe's "Second Life" program allow functional devices to be reused by schools, nonprofits, and community organizations.

  • Public collection and awareness campaigns: In various cities, joint efforts between local governments, NGOs, and companies invite people to bring in unused devices in exchange for helpful information, incentives, or discounts on responsible recycling.

  • Responsible trade-in programs: Some brands and distributors now offer trade-in programs that reward customers for returning used equipment, ensuring it’s properly collected and treated.

  • Use of recycled materials in new products: Some companies are beginning to incorporate recycled materials into their manufacturing processes, further reinforcing their commitment to the circular economy.

Joining the Change

Small decisions—like knowing where to take an unused device, encouraging clients to reuse functional equipment, or choosing suppliers who are committed to sustainability—can have a significant impact. It’s not about achieving perfection, but about making a start. And when we do it as a network, it becomes easier, more accessible, and far more powerful.

Building a more sustainable AV industry isn’t just a goal—it’s an opportunity. An opportunity to inspire, to care for what we share, and to show that technology can also be part of the solution.
