When Communications Are Mission-Critical: What Live Medical Conferences Can Teach Us About Intercom
Most live productions can tolerate the occasional communication hiccup.
A live medical procedure cannot.
At the 14th World Live Neurovascular Conference (WLNC) in Lisbon, some of the world's leading neurointerventionalists performed complex procedures while sharing their work in real time with a global audience. Physicians in Argentina, China, France, Turkey, and the United States connected directly to the conference, allowing delegates from 63 countries to observe and interact with procedures as they happened.
For attendees, it was an opportunity to learn from experts without leaving the conference hall.
For the production team, it was a communications challenge unlike almost any other.
When the Stakes Are Higher Than the Show
In traditional live production, communications systems help crews coordinate cameras, talent, graphics, and timing. At WLNC, communication served an entirely different purpose.
Doctors performing aneurysm treatments and stroke interventions were answering questions from moderators and fellow specialists while actively treating patients. Every question, response, and instruction needed to be heard clearly and delivered without delay.
There was no opportunity to ask someone to repeat themselves because of a poor connection or unintelligible audio.
In this environment, communications infrastructure becomes more than a production tool. It becomes a critical part of the event itself.
Connecting Operating Rooms Across Continents
The conference's signature "all live cases" format relies on real-time interaction between Lisbon and operating rooms around the world.
That means connecting clinicians, moderators, technical teams, and production staff across multiple countries and time zones while maintaining a seamless experience for the audience.
At the heart of those conversations was Riedel's Artist intercom platform.
The system carried all communications between the conference venue and participating hospitals, creating a direct link between physicians in operating rooms and moderators on stage. Whether coordinating production elements or facilitating clinical discussions, Artist provided a common communications platform for everyone involved.
For the audience, those connections appeared effortless.
Behind the scenes, they depended on a communications network designed to perform under pressure.
Why Audio Quality Matters More Than Ever
Video often gets the attention in remote productions, but audio is what makes collaboration possible.
A dropped frame may go unnoticed. A missed word can change an entire conversation.
At WLNC, low-latency SD-WAN connections linked remote hospitals with Lisbon, while a fully digital audio chain helped preserve clarity from microphone to earpiece. Every participant — from conference moderators to operating physicians — needed to hear and be heard without distraction.
When experts are discussing procedures in real time, intelligibility is not simply a convenience. It is a requirement.
From Intercom to Workflow Platform
Another interesting aspect of the project was how communications infrastructure extended beyond voice communications.
Working with PlayfulBits UK, the production team leveraged Riedel's 1200 Series SmartPanels and Control Panel App to create a centralized operational environment. From a single panel interface, operators could manage PTZ cameras, tally systems, return monitors, and other production resources located both on-site and at remote hospitals.
The result was a workflow that brought communication and control together on a common platform.
This reflects a broader trend across many industries. Communications systems are increasingly becoming operational hubs that connect people, devices, and workflows rather than simply carrying conversations.
A Different Kind of Remote Production
Remote production has become commonplace across broadcast, sports, and live events. But projects like WLNC demonstrate just how far these workflows can go.
The conference combined global collaboration, live medical procedures, cloud-based control, remote device management, and intercontinental communications into a single production environment.
More importantly, it enabled physicians around the world to share expertise in real time, creating learning opportunities that would have been impossible just a few years ago.
Communications That People Don't Think About
The best communications systems are often the ones nobody notices.
At WLNC, attendees focused on the procedures. Physicians focused on their patients. Moderators focused on the discussion.
That's exactly how it should be.
When communications work flawlessly, technology fades into the background and people can focus on what matters most. In this case, that meant facilitating the exchange of life-saving medical knowledge among experts around the world.
And that's a reminder that while intercom systems are often associated with live production, their real value lies in connecting people when clear, reliable communication matters most.
