This is more of a qualitative post than usual. For years we've known that COVID-19 has a profound impact on the business of pro AV. For that reason, I've considered it part of my job to check the trends in case counts around the world once a week, every Monday. This has helped me look past the headlines, notice regional trends, and give better guidance. But this summer, something has changed.
Previously, I almost had to hold myself back from checking more frequently. Trends don't change in one day after all. But lately, I find Mondays slipping by without that same desire to check. I'm sure this is partially driven by the actual course of the data, with far lower daily death counts and relatively steady cases over the summer. How much of this is also driven by our society's shift away from overall COVID concern? Slowly setting aside caution and establishing new long term norms? I'm genuinely curious to hear from AV folks about these questions. What are you seeing?
This is especially relevant to live events, where full recovery remains most likely in 2024. The return to in-person is happening, but the most crowded spaces still face lingering cautions and demand weakness.
