The tech industry has a complex relationship with the environment. But what if the very tools that contribute to the problem could also be part of the solution?

The urgency of environmental responsibility has never been clearer. Businesses are increasingly seeking ways to reduce their carbon footprint and create more sustainable workplaces. 92% of organizations surveyed by Conservation International say reducing carbon emissions is an urgent priority. And 83% of businesses are willing to pay at least 20% more for AV products made more sustainably or operating with greater efficiency.

IT and AV professionals have a significant role to play in this green revolution.

By embracing sustainable technology and implementing eco-friendly practices, we can contribute to a healthier planet and a more responsible workplace.

Technology’s impact on the environment

While technology offers incredible benefits, it also has an environmental impact. Consider this:

  • Energy consumption: Data centers, office equipment, and digital signage consume significant amounts of energy, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.
  • e-waste: Discarded electronics contribute to growing landfills and pose risks to human health and the environment. Research shows that in 2021, 57.4 million metric tonnes (Mt) of e-waste were generated worldwide, and this figure is projected to grow to 74.7 Mt by 2030.
  • Resource depletion: The production of technology requires valuable resources, including minerals, water, and energy.

How IT/AV can drive environmental change

Here are six ways IT/AV professionals can use technology to create a greener workplace:

  1. Energy-efficient devices: Choose devices with high energy efficiency ratings, such as ChromeOS devices, which are known for their low power consumption.
  2. Cloud-based solutions: Migrating to cloud-based platforms like Google Workspace minimizes the need for energy-intensive on-premises servers. Google's data centers are twice as energy efficient as the typical enterprise data center.
  3. Remote collaboration tools: Promote the use of video conferencing and collaboration tools to reduce the need for business travel and its associated carbon emissions.
  4. Smart building technologies: Implement smart building systems that optimize lighting, heating, and cooling based on occupancy and environmental conditions. Studies show that smart building technologies can reduce overall electricity consumption by 10-20%.
  5. Digital signage for sustainability: Use digital signage to promote sustainability initiatives, share eco-friendly tips, and raise awareness about environmental issues within the workplace.
  6. Responsible e-waste management: Implement responsible e-waste disposal programs to ensure that old electronics are recycled or disposed of properly.

Built for a better future: The Appspace and ChromeOS sustainability story

Appspace, combined with ChromeOS, offers a particularly sustainable solution for the modern workplace:

  • Energy efficiency: ChromeOS devices are known for their low power consumption, reducing energy usage and minimizing environmental impact.
  • Cloud-based platform: Appspace is a cloud-based platform, reducing reliance on on-premises servers and their associated energy consumption.
  • Device repurposing with ChromeOS Flex: Extend the life of older devices by installing ChromeOS Flex, giving them a new purpose and reducing e-waste. This allows organizations to repurpose existing hardware for digital signage, kiosks, or employee workstations, maximizing their investment and minimizing environmental impact.
  • Centralized management: Appspace's centralized management platform allows for efficient control and monitoring of devices, optimizing energy usage and reducing waste.

IT/AV: Leading the green charge:

By embracing sustainable technology and implementing eco-friendly practices, IT/AV professionals can play a key role in creating a greener and more responsible workplace.

Here are some additional steps to consider:

  • Conduct an energy audit: Assess your current energy consumption and identify areas for improvement.
  • Develop a sustainability policy: Create a clear sustainability policy that outlines your organization's commitment to environmental responsibility.
  • Educate employees: Raise awareness about sustainable practices and encourage employees to adopt eco-friendly habits in the workplace.
  • Partner with sustainable vendors: Choose vendors that share your commitment to sustainability and offer eco-friendly products and services.

By taking these steps, we can leverage technology to create a workplace that is not only productive and efficient but also environmentally responsible.
