AVIXA Host Gibran Nassif led a LinkedIn Live called Bridging The Gap: IT and AV, where he spoke with Frank Padikkala, Technical Sales Engineer at Audinate, and Jimmy Vaughn, Partner Technical Specialist at Microsoft. They discussed AV and IT convergence, its obstacles, and the trends. Here is a recap of their talk.
Padikkala and Vaughn agreed that AV and IT are entwined, but still, some barriers exist.
"AV and IT need to live in the same world," said Vaughn. "Each one has to have a fundamental understanding of the other one so they can both move forward and live together inside these organizations."
"It's about bridging the gaps," continued Padikkala. "It's about understanding where we're lacking and pushing forward."
Device management was touched upon, and then trends were also discussed. Regarding emerging trends in the AV and IT industry, what are some that we need to be aware of on both sides?
"The network is growing," said Padikkala. "Technologies today are leveraging cloud platforms extensively. Cloud providers are offering amazing infrastructure that you can leverage. I think the biggest trend in terms of what AV and IT are seeing is that the infrastructure is crazy. You can do whatever you want. It's possible today through these amazing infrastructure platforms."
"My trend is AI," replied Vaughn. "I have seen a tremendous amount of movement in the last four to five months in AI. [On ChatGPT,] I asked it to write me a Crestron program. There were one or two lines that could have been tweaked a little bit, but AI actually did that in a tremendous format. AI is going to be something that we cannot avoid no matter what industry we're in because it's going to become pervasive, and it's going to be here. Now, how we do responsible AI is going to be really the topic that comes into play. AI and IT are going to be a part of that."
And finally, what are some precautions when it comes to AV and IT working together?
"The importance of communication plays a critical role in making sure that the intent of the project is met appropriately," said Padikkala. "And I think the biggest precaution is making sure that there aren't any assumptions about what you're trying to achieve. Somewhere along the way, when [AV] started interacting with IT, we started drawing the line of 'hey, that's not my job, that's their job!' You can't do that. You have to be in constant communication to ensure that the needs are met. And from an education perspective, keep learning. I know it's easier said than done, but if you think of it as part of your job, that constant improvement process, will make you better technology professionals."
"Misunderstandings can lead to a lot of confusion and a lot of problems," agreed Vaughn.
