LetsTalkAVbyAlexis Series: Episode 7: What is the AV industry, and why does it matter?
Welcome back to “Let’s Talk AV with Alexis” !
Across previous episodes, we explored the core building blocks of successful audiovisual projects, AV rack room design, AVoIP fundamentals, commissioning workflows, common integration mistakes and designing effective auditoriums. A consistent theme has emerged: successful AV outcomes are not defined at installation, but during the early stages of system definition, design intent and stakeholder alignment.
This brings us to Episode 7: What is the AV industry and why does it matter?
This question may seem simple, but it is fundamental to how we define our profession within the AV ecosystem.
What is the AV Industry?
In industry terms defined by AVIXA, the audiovisual (AV) industry encompasses the design, integration, deployment and management of technologies that enable communication experiences through audio, video, control and collaboration systems.
From my perspective, AV is not defined by individual products, but by systems and experiences. It sits at the intersection of:
- Content (what is communicated).
- Technology (the systems enabling delivery).
- Space (the physical or virtual environment where interaction occurs).
Modern AV systems are therefore experience-driven ecosystems that combine hardware, software, networking and human interaction design.
Core Scope of the AV Industry:
The AV industry spans multiple technical and operational domains, including:
- AV System Design and Engineering (signal flow, room acoustics, display systems, audio reinforcement, control systems)
- AV Integration (system assembly, configuration, interoperability across subsystems)
- AV over IP (AVoIP) architectures replacing traditional matrix switching with networked distribution
- Unified Communications and Collaboration (UCC) platforms integrating AV with enterprise IT environments
- Control Systems Programming and automation (user interface design, system logic, workflow optimization)
- Commissioning and Verification (system performance testing, functional validation and handover documentation)
- Managed Services and Lifecycle Support (ongoing system monitoring, maintenance and optimization)
Where AV is Applied ?
AV systems are embedded across nearly every vertical market:
- Corporate environments (meeting rooms, boardrooms, collaboration spaces).
- Education (classrooms, lecture halls, hybrid learning environments).
- Healthcare (telemedicine, operating theaters, patient communication systems); Example I checked earlier: Take a hospital telemedicine cart. If the audio latency is off by half a second, a doctor in one city and a patient in another start talking over each other. That’s not a “tech spec” problem, that’s a human connection problem.
- Transportation hubs (flight information systems, wayfinding, public address systems).
- Mission-critical environments (control rooms, emergency operations centers).
- Hospitality, retail and live event venues (digital signage, immersive experiences, entertainment systems).
Why the AV Industry Matters Today ?
The AV industry has evolved significantly beyond traditional audio and display technologies. Today, it is a critical enabler of digital transformation and workplace experience strategies.
Key industry shifts include:
- AV as IT convergence: AV systems are increasingly deployed over enterprise IP networks, requiring alignment with IT standards, cybersecurity practices and network design principles.
- Experience-centric design: The focus has shifted from device functionality to human experience design, including usability, accessibility and engagement.
- Hybrid collaboration enablement: AV systems now bridge in-room and remote participants through integrated conferencing and collaboration platforms.
- Scalable and software-defined systems: Growth of virtualized processing, cloud-based control and subscription-based AV services.
- Standardization and interoperability: Increasing reliance on industry standards, certification programs and best practices defined by AVIXA and related bodies.
In Simple Terms...
The AV industry is the discipline of designing and integrating systems that enable effective human communication through audio, video and interactive technologies across physical and digital environments.
It’s not about the gear. Honestly, it never was !
Final Thought !
For professionals entering or growing within the AV industry, technical knowledge alone is not sufficient. The real value lies in understanding:
- Systems thinking over standalone products.
- User experience over technical capability alone.
- Integration across AV, IT and communications ecosystems.
- Lifecycle performance, not just installation delivery.
The AV industry ultimately exists to solve a human problem: how to communicate clearly, effectively and meaningfully in an increasingly connected world.
