Turning a School Hall into a Performance-Ready Sound Environment
Campbelltown Performing Arts High School is one of Sydney’s leading specialist performing arts schools. Their hall supports assemblies, presentations, drama productions, concerts, school events and high-impact student performances.
The Existing Challenge
The existing PA system was no longer giving the school the clarity, coverage or performance capability the space required.
From our first assessment, it was clear the hall needed more than extra volume. It needed a properly designed audio system that could deliver clear speech, strong musical performance, even coverage and simple control for everyday school use.

Common Issues We Identified
The challenges were familiar ones we often see in older school halls:
- Uneven sound coverage across the room
- Limited power and headroom
- Speech that lacked clarity in parts of the hall
- Music playback that lacked depth and impact
- Limited flexibility for productions and performances
- A system that was not keeping up with the school’s creative and operational needs
The Audio Visual Solution
Our solution brought together Fohhn loudspeaker technology, Q-SYS DSP control, Dante networked audio, dedicated amplification, wireless microphones and custom touchscreen operation.
We selected Fohhn LX-600 line-array loudspeakers because the hall needed controlled, even coverage from the front row to the rear of the audience area. In a performance-based school environment, this matters. Students, teachers and guests all need to hear clearly, whether it is spoken word, music playback, live performance or a formal presentation.
Why Fohhn Was Selected
We used Fohhn because the hall required a professional loudspeaker system with clarity, control and headroom — not just volume.
- The Fohhn LX-600 line-array loudspeakers helped deliver consistent coverage across the hall, reducing the common issue of loud sound at the front and weaker, less clear sound at the rear.
- The Fohhn AS-40 subwoofers provided controlled low-frequency support, giving music, drama, film playback and performance events greater depth and impact without overpowering the room.
- The system is powered by dedicated Fohhn DSP amplifiers, giving the hall the power, speaker protection and processing needed for a professional audio environment.
Q-SYS Control and Dante Audio Networking
At the heart of the system, we integrated a Q-SYS Core 8 Flex for DSP processing, routing and control.
- Dante networked audio provides clean digital audio distribution and gives the school a platform that can grow with future performance and AV requirements.
Simple Control for Staff
One of the most important parts of the project was usability.
A performing arts hall may need professional-grade capability, but it also needs to be practical for teachers and school staff. We designed custom Q-SYS touchscreen controls with simple operating modes such as Speech, Music and Performance, so the system can be used confidently without requiring technical knowledge every time the hall is opened.
The Real Benefits
The real result is a hall that now feels more capable, more balanced and more professional.
- Speech is clearer
- Music has greater depth and presence
- Coverage is more even across the audience area
- Staff have simpler control
- Students have a better performance environment
The school now has an audio platform that supports assemblies, productions and events with confidence.
The Outcome for Students and the School
For students, better sound means better engagement, stronger performances and a more professional experience.
For schools, it shows how the right AV infrastructure can support learning, creativity, communication and community events for years to come.
Masters Voice Technology - Lessons Learned
For Masters Voice Technology, this project strengthened our belief that great AV design is not just about equipment. It is about understanding the room, the people using it and the outcomes the system needs to deliver.
This project reflects what we focus on at Masters Voice Technology: designing systems that are technically strong, practical to operate and built around the real needs of the people using the space.
