Rooms are Xchange’s micro-communities. They are highly focused forum-style spaces where content is posted and commented on, and lively conversations are had. In previous posts, you’ve learned the differences between posts and conversations, how to post in multiple rooms, why it’s important to “Watch” rooms of interest, and so much more. But did you know there are three types of rooms on Xchange?

Xchange features public, private, and secret rooms. Most of its rooms are open, public spaces. Members can easily enter a room and start or engage in a discussion. When posting, public rooms will all be displayed in the editor, available to select.

Private rooms, however, are by invitation or request. They are visible on the main rooms page, but you’ll note a “private” label above the room name.  These rooms allow for defined groups to interact. They may be based on content requiring registration or simply by a request from industry groups. If you are interested in joining a private room, please make your request by emailing xchange@avixa.org.

Secret rooms are an important part of the community as well. They provide members who are part of a committee, council, or advisory group, for example, a confidential space to collaborate. Secret rooms may also host course content, granting students access to exclusive course materials and access to its instructor. As secret rooms accommodate specific individuals, there is no need to have them displayed with the available rooms.

Private and Secret rooms offer two levels of participation. If you are a “Member” of the room, you’ll be able to view all the content, but you will be unable to contribute or comment. More commonly, you’ll be invited to participate as a “Contributor,” able to post, comment, and engage in conversations.

If you receive an email invitation to join a private or secret room, simply click the link. You’ll be directed to the space and your status as a contributor or member will be activated. If you’ve been invited as a Contributor, the room will appear among the list of public rooms to select from in the editor.

Please note, if content is posted to a private or secret room, it cannot be shared with any public spaces.

To view all the rooms in Xchange, click the hamburger menu icon in the upper left and scroll down to rooms. Any that are available to you will display here. Another method is from the home page where you’ll see eight rooms featured. Just above the tiles on the right you’ll see “View all.” You can also access your rooms by choosing “My Network” from your top navigation. If you don’t see the room you’re looking for displayed, start typing into the “Search rooms in your network” search field.

You’ll find some that focus on a topic or market segment, and others that enable you to connect with members in your region or with a study group. Whether you’re wanting advice from an industry expert, looking for your next career opportunity, or are anxious to showcase your latest phenomenal project, you’ll find a room full of others wanting the same.
