The Largest Video Mapping Event in the World Returns
iMapp Bucharest, known as the largest video mapping event in the world, returned for its 8th edition in September! Bucharest citizens and tourists gathered in Constitution Square to admire the 3D works of some of the most valuable artistic teams in the world.
Folks enjoyed music, street food, activities, and installations, all culminating in the screening of the international competition. The theme for this year, CONTRASTS, was explored by artists in innovative ways.
The event typically goes on for 12 hours every year. Leading up to it, artistic teams from around the globe vie for a chance to have their art projected on the façade of Romania’s Palace of the Parliament. The building itself is one of the heaviest buildings created and is also the second-largest administrative building in the world!
Stories beautifully come to life on the massive administrative building for the competition every year. The results of this global competition are jaw-dropping and awe-spiring, showcasing vivid scenes of grandiose faces and geometric beauties. Check out the official after-movie from a previous year.
The international 3D video mapping competition iMapp Bucharest – Winners League has been organized since 2014 by the Bucharest City Hall through CREART – Center for Creation, Art and Tradition of Bucharest. Throughout its previous editions, the festival has brought together audiences of more than 400,000 spectators and has become a reference topic for specialists in the worldwide audiovisual industry.
In 2020, iMapp Bucharest started the international solidarity campaign, “One World. One Heart,” and it was announced as the winner of the “AV IN ACTION” category at the AV AWARDS in London – the famous international competition that recognizes excellence in the entire audiovisual industry, organized by AV Magazine from the UK. In 2023, iMapp Bucharest also won a Telly Award.
The finalists whose visual works were projected during the 2023 event were winners of 5 partner festivals: Video Mapping Festival Lille (in France), Genius Loci Weimar Festival (in Germany), CosmoLights Projections Mapping (in Greece), Zsolnay Light Festival (in Hungary), and 1Minute Projection Mapping Competition (in Japan). The jury consisted of leading international audiovisual arts specialists who decided together on a grand winner.
Winner of 2023
The winner of iMapp Bucharest 2023 is Julia Shamsheieva, who previously won 1Minute Projection Mapping Competition!
Based in Ukraine, her practice consists of experiments with various media such as video mapping, digital art, interactive installations, AR/VR, and more. Letting the light in to tell a story, expanding the boundaries, and adding a different context are the artist’s main goals with her work.
Part of her winning display can be seen in this video! And a longer video of the entire magnificent 2023 event can be viewed here. It’s wonderful to see such a global event come together.
