In one of the latest videos of the How'd They Do That? series, AVIXA spoke with Aleix Pratdepàdua and Eugenio Civera about the Mirador Torre Glòries, an observation deck at the top of one of the most iconic buildings in Barcelona.
Located between Avinguda Diagonal and Carrer Badajoz, the Torre Glòries is a massive 38-story skyscraper. This building was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel and intended to resemble the shape of a geyser rising into the air. It can be hard to stand out in a place known for its architecture, but with its unique shape and AV additions, the Torre Glòries certainly is a sight to see.
So, what are its AV marvels? For starters, the outside of the tower has features like temperature sensors. The sensors regulate the opening and closing of the window blinds, reducing energy consumption for air conditioning. And the building is well known for its nocturnal illumination, using 4,500 LED devices. While you may be familiar with this building due to the colorful show it puts on at night, it's the AV on the inside that's going to truly change how you view the city, as can be seen in the video.
The journey to the top floor begins all the way underground – that’s where scientific data is collected by APIs and used to generate and modify the audiovisual content on display at this exhibit. Then, the series of multi-sensory exhibits at the top encourages visitors to consider the ecosystems that make up this Seaside Metropolis.
“Everything that you see and you hear happens in real time depending on the data that we gather via API,” said Pratdepàdua in the video. “There is an installation that we can hear but we don't see that is called a Sirena, a siren. The living soundtrack is created depending on the variables that are taking place in real-time outside the tower in the city, and it is music that you will hear only once, nevermore, because these variables will not take place again.”
These variables combine to produce a one-of-a-kind experience that keeps visitors coming back.
Another installation in the observation deck that is mentioned in the video is Atmospheres. This 85-foot projection is part of the Hyperview Barcelona exhibit inside the landmark Mirador Torre Glòries. It uses generative art, technology, and scientific data to visualize Barcelona’s natural and human phenomena. The eight pieces put together for Atmospheres visualize wind, sea, sound, and astronomical data.
“We have a representation of the wind, and then you can see like a fabric, a silky fabric, that moves around and then depending on the wind, this fabric changes the movement, changes the rhythm, changes the colors, everything changes, depending on this data that we are getting in real-time,” said Pratdepàdua.
In the video, several of the installations are shown. And there’s even a walkable sculpture! See for yourself and check out more videos on our YouTube channel or AVIXA TV, our newest location for all our AV-related video content.

Wow, will need to check this out next ISE!
Count me in, @Megan Petrovich (She/Her) ! Indeed wow!
This is amazing!
I love the sound elements as part of the experience, too. This would be great for any big city!
This is an incredible piece of living art building, it is very interesting how the data collection around can be transformed into audio visuals. I had seen it before from the outside but I really didn´t put much attention, my first reaction when I saw it was related to the Gherkin building in London, similar shape and its construction date is similar to Torre Glòries. I hope we have the chance to visit during next ISE.
