With Earth Day coming up this weekend, I wanted to find examples of AV companies that are incorporating environmentally sustainable practices into their business models.  I was fortunate enough to speak with @Gareth Coleman at Omega Pro Audio, whose company manufactures an outdoor speaker box that is made from 92% recycled plastic.  We talked about the process to build these speakers and where the idea came from in the video below.

The last line of the video goes fast, but I hope you didn't miss it – these speakers can be recycled at the end of their lifespan and used again.  Add in the fact that the cost is no different than plywood and I hope that this is a procurement and disposal model that can be replicated elsewhere in Pro AV.

Many thanks to Gareth for his time - please reach out to him if you'd like to learn more!

Thank you Mark. It was a pleasure speaking with you.

I also forgot to mention another key reason is to creat a cyclical chain, from new product to end of life, the material can be returned to be recycled again after 10-15 years (or longer) for us to make the latest product of that time, using little extra raw materials to do so. This approach puts much less strain on  global resources.  you can see more about us at www.omegaproaudio.co.uk

I would suggest that any company selling goods can get in on this method, even without recyclable material, many products can be reconditioned to as new and re sold/deployed, adding another 5 years or more to its lifecycle. I believe one of our competitors D&B have a product refurbish service, albeit not recycled material, but with their standard wooden products, so it is starting to happen more and more.

Fantastic! It's a win all around. @Gareth Coleman, thank you for pursuing this incredible solution and for sharing it with our community. I'd love to get a demo! And thanks, @Mark Metzger for bringing us his story.

Hi Mark,

Technomad has been using 100% recycled plastic for our loudspeaker cabinets for years with the added bonus that we also use a unique, entirely zero emission, solar rotational molding technology to make the cabinets. Pretty much all other plastic cabinets use either electricity for injection molded parts or natural gas for rotomolded cabinets, both of which have a big carbon footprint.

Best,

Rodger von Kries
