The Bourne Stuntacular: A Masterclass in Theme Park Live Performance
The Bourne Stuntacular is an immersive performance at Universal Studios in Orlando that combines stunt show theatrics with cutting edge visual effects to create a compelling, entertaining experience with a unique blend of action and audiovisual elements. It utilizes a massive LED screen across a theater stage and other advanced technology to enhance mind bending stunts as you follow Jason Bourne through three locations from the Bourne films: DC, Dubai, and Morocco.
Setting the Stage: The World of Bourne
For those unfamiliar with the Bourne films, it’s a spy thriller franchise from the early 2000s. It follows the titular Jason Bourne, a former CIA black-ops assassin with amnesia, trying to survive and uncover his identity. The films are loosely based on a novel series of the same name, and The Bourne Identity in particular paved the way for current action adventure sequences and set the standard for an era of spy thriller films. Bourne is a fairly iconic spy character.
The Bourne Stuntacular show at Universal Studios Florida follows Jason Bourne through a series of locations seen in the films. There’s even a cameo appearance in the pre-show by a character from The Bourne Identity, Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles), along with other homages and nods to the franchise—such as Bourne’s iconic Mini Cooper from The Bourne Identity and his motorcycle from The Bourne Ultimatum.
The Bourne franchise, particularly the initial trilogy, helped set the tone and landscape for action thriller movies for years. The Mini Cooper car chase from The Bourne Identity is an iconic scene that established what gripping chase sequences should look like for many spy thriller movies to come.
The Bourne Stuntacular is a brilliant nod to its standard-setting movie origins, with equally impressive stunts and technology on display!
The Cutting-Edge Visual Effects
To design an immersive, theatrical stunt performance worthy of the Bourne spy thriller franchise, the Bourne Stuntacular creators took advantage of the latest in visual technology. The LED screen that serves as the primary stage backdrop is a massive 3,640 square feet—It’s 130 feet wide and 28 feet tall. That’s huge!
Combined with advanced projection mapping technology, this allows for the stunt performer playing Jason Bourne—and all the real and virtual stunt people chasing after him—to create both the illusion of motion and actual rapid movement in front of the live audience..
The story of The Bourne Stuntacular travels to key locations from the Bourne films such as DC, a marketplace in Tangier, and Dubai. Props come in and out for key locations and moments, enhanced by the LED screen. There’s even real pyrotechnics and two high free-fall drops performed!
Immersive Sound Design
Visual effects aren’t the only elements prioritized in the Bourne Stuntacular. Fire effects, smoke and wind, and an impressive audio experience complement the visual spectacle. Feel wind from a helicopter as Bourne dangles from its skids and see and hear the pings of missed gunshots.
Instead of relying only on audio like in a movie theater performance, the Bourne Stuntacular combines theater and stage play effects with stunt effects. There are gunshot sounds that seem to hit the tower Bourne is scaling up precariously, barely missing our hero as he flees. This trifecta of technique, props, and the latest AV tech will completely enthrall you as you watch.
Seamless Synchronization
Universal Studios in Orlando actually partnered with various creative teams to come up with a seamless experience, including producer Frank Marshall from the Bourne films, to come up with a unique and engaging storyline.
To completely engage the audience, the timing of effects and story beats have to be perfect. To do that, the Bourne Stuntacular utilizes some impressive technology. For instance, performers ride a stationary motorcycle, which seems to be moving due to the realistic screen visuals and seamless interactions.
The props don’t operate on a track; instead, they sync with the screen behind them and are ushered off once the sequences are done. How cool is that? This allows for props from multiple locations to be moved onto the stage as a typical theatrical performance would allow, without constraining the set to just one location. It’s pretty revolutionary!
If that wasn’t impressive enough, there’s also a 20-foot wide lift that can bring up to two vehicles from under the stage. The lift can even rotate the vehicles, creating the illusion that the car is being driven at high speed!
Audience Experience
The action you’ll experience on the stage of The Bourne Stuntacular is high-paced and frenetic. Overall, be prepared for a wild ride!
If you’re a fan of the Bourne films, The Bourne Stuntacular is a must-see when checking out shows at Universal Studios—if only just to see the actual Mini Cooper from The Bourne Identity. As a longtime Bourne fan myself, that alone is worth the price of admission. Well, that and seeing Julia Stiles reprise her role as Nicky. She was a favorite!
The Bourne Stuntacular is also accessible by wheelchair and ECV. It’s important to note that there are some startling special effects and loud noises, so plan accordingly if that can be overwhelming.
Ultimately, The Bourne Stuntacular is an epic leap in AV technology and theme park show experience. The creators of the show at Universal Studios take advantage of massive and engaging visual effects combined with impressive practical stunt performances. You won’t want to miss seeing it for yourself!
