In today’s digital landscape, ensuring a safe and secure environment is essential for organisations everywhere. In this blog, we highlight seven features — including Android device security and ProMGR — that make ProDVX devices among the most secure available. Read on or watch the webinar below to learn more.

Security features on ProDVX Android devices

ProDVX devices have many different security features, ensuring your fleet can benefit from optimal device security. Let’s delve deeper into the most important features, including:

1. Optimal network security with IEEE 802.1X

IEEE 802.1X is a standard for network access control (NAC) that provides an authentication framework for securing wired and wireless networks. It allows devices to authenticate themselves before gaining access to a network. This prevents unauthorised access and ensures that only authorised users or devices can connect.

IEEE 802.1X typically involves three main components:

  • The supplicant: the client device seeking access;
  • The authenticator: the network device such as a switch or wireless access point;
  • The authentication server: which verifies the credentials provided by the supplicant.

2. Android Debug Bridge

The Android Debug Bridge (ADB) is a versatile command-line tool that allows developers to communicate with a device running Android. It offers a powerful way to connect to your devices, simplifying the installation or debugging of applications. Moreover, ADB provides access to a Unix shell, enabling developers to run various commands on a device. Customers need to be aware of the potential risks associated with this connectivity, as it essentially sets the door to the vault wide open.

Important to note: On ProDVX devices, the ADB connection through I/O ports is enabled by default, while the ADB connection through LAN is disabled by default. ADB connections can be opened or closed upon request.

3. Regular firmware releases

Android regularly releases firmware updates. For the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) versions, ProDVX issues two releases a year. For the Google Mobile Services (GMS) certified devices like the APPC-10SLBe, ProDVX issues four releases a year. Importantly, when a new high-risk vulnerability is discovered, we will take immediate action by releasing the latest update to ensure continued device security.

4. Further enhance device security with ProMGR

ProMGR is our new device management tool and brings many benefits to your business. One essential benefit is its contribution to device security. ProMGR provides enhanced security and management capabilities, giving your organisation full control and ownership over the devices.

ProMGR deployment

The tool allows you to enforce policies, remotely manage

settings, and install or remove applications on the devices without requiring user intervention. Moreover, ProMGR enables you to set the device to kiosk mode, manage which apps can run on the devices, and distribute content in a secure manner using local feature, app, and files management functionalities.

5. Disable I/O ports

Disabling the I/O ports on the device helps to prevent unauthorised access, ensuring that intruders can neither connect with your devices nor transfer data. Please note, these ports are enabled by default.

6. Hardware accessories

Hardware accessories, such as our cover plate, physically cover and protect your USB and pogo ports from intrusion.

7. Benefit from Android Device Security

Android is a highly secure operating system, incorporating several layers of security measures to protect user data, privacy, and the integrity of the system. Here’s an overview of the most relevant Android device security measures:

  1. Regular security updates to keep the system secure against emerging threats;
  2. Application sandboxing to prevent malicious apps from accessing sensitive information;
  3. Google Play Protect to protect the device from malware and other security threats (for GMS versions only);
  4. Verified Boot to prevent malware from tampering with the boot process;
  5. Encryption to protect sensitive data stored on the device;
  6. Permissions System to control the access that apps on the device have.

Optimal device security with ProDVX

Running the highly secure Android operating system in combination with our device security features and ProMGR, you can rest assured that your fleet benefits from optimal device security.
