Hi everyone, I wanted to share a fun ears-on opportunity at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.  The Spatial Audio Tidepool is an intensive two-module experiential workshop on the technologies, techniques, and aesthetics of immersive sound and music. The first Spatial Audio Tidepool was a great success with so much positive feedback from the participants that we have decided to offer the program again. The 2026 edition of the Spatial Audio Tidepool will take place in two sessions during June 22 - 24, and June 25 - 27, 2026. This workshop will make extensive use of the spatial audio facilities at Virginia Tech, including the 140 loudspeaker Cube and 92 loudspeaker Perform Studio. Details follow.  The first session consists of a curriculum on spatial audio, covering topics such as Ambisonics, spatial mixing strategies, granular spatialization, spectral spatialization, high-density loudspeaker arrays (HDLAs), bone conduction headphones for hybrid spatial audio scenarios, and many other topics. Critical listening to major works composed for immersive audio contexts is another key aspect of this module.   The second session is a limited-enrollment, hands-on workshop with personalized instruction for the creation of immersive works using Virginia Tech’s immersive technologies such as the 138.2 loudspeaker Cube, 88.4 loudspeaker Perform Studio, and the 32 loudspeaker Tesseract, a transportable HDLA. Participants are welcome to enroll in either one or both sessions.
