Due to an increased spam accounts, Facebook continues to improve their data policies. Their data privacy page features an interactive interface with Q&As and policies
Facebook’s safeguards seek to protect the information you provide, including payment details and device usage. This focus finds its root in the legal case of Lane v. Facebook. In 2007, Facebook app Beacon tracked website activity away from the social platform, with accusations of broadcasting private information without consent.
The primary goal of this new data initiative is “providing improving and developing service.” Examples include easier tagging, such as facial recognition for simpler photo sharing and uploading. Another example is relevant advertising, as browser cookies collect data on shopping history to provide relevant and timely ads on Facebook that relate to your purchasing behavior.
The most notable component (for better or worse) is their transparency in public information and legalities. Facebook lists public information as “any information you share with a public audience, as well as information in your Public Profile” which is “available to anyone on or off our Services and can be seen or accessed through online search engines, APIs, and offline media, such as on TV.”
While Facebook does not share information that identifies you (like names or email addresses) the company does have the right to “access, preserve and share your information in response to a legal request (like a search warrant, court order or subpoena) if we have a good faith belief that the law requires us to do so.”
Further progress needs to take place, as the company has a right to provide confidential information, “including financial transaction data related to purchases made with Facebook, may be accessed, processed and retained.”
With the growth and reach of technology, risks are bound to occur. Users and marketers must be mindful not only on Facebook, but through all social networks.
