This position requires experience and knowledge of audio and video control systems and functionality. The A/V Integration Technician will join our team of campus leaders in the design and integration of technologies in state-of-the-art learning environments. Our team is responsible for the integration and operational support of audiovisual technologies including Trinity College of Arts & Sciences classrooms but not limited to only Trinity Technology Services spaces. This position requires close cooperation with the A/V Classroom Support Team and our customers to perform installations as assigned on and off campus.

 

The A/V Integration Technician reports to the Manager, AV and Integration, Academic & Media Technologies. Duke University Office of Information Technology. The position will be assigned to a specific support zone, but will be expected to provide occasional backup to any location on campus within Arts & Sciences and to work with local departments which provide on-site support for departmental events.  The Analyst, IT will proactively ensure high-quality service and user experience for all clients of TTS supported spaces.

 

DUTIES & WORK PERFORMED

 

  • Assist with A/V equipment installations in a variety of spaces, including conference rooms, classrooms, lecture halls, and offices, as well as digital signage and other areas as needed.  Installations may include transportation, unboxing, and physical installation of A/V devices and accessories.  Adhere to local building and fire codes, manufacturer installation requirements, and Duke standards for all installation procedures.
  • Experience with A/V rack fabrication, pull, terminate and test Category cable, plus various other cables, mounting hardware (projectors, manual and electric projection screens, large format displays, cameras, microphones, speakers, document cameras, streaming technologies, etc.)
  • Installation, configuration, and testing of videoconferencing, audiovisual equipment, and collaboration technologies. (ex. ZoomRoom)
  • Team based collaboration to design A/V systems for our client’s needs. Perform site visits of potential projects and work with clients to determine intended usage and best options for implementing a system to meet the needs of the users. Create Bill of Materials (BOM) and provide all relevant information to manager and clients regarding potential upgrades or OIT-AV projects. 
  • Knowledge in the design of equipment from a variety of AV equipment manufacturers, such as Biamp, Cisco, Crestron, Extron, LG, Logitech, NEC, Panasonic, Sharp, Sony, Vaddio.
  • Day-to-day support of AV equipped spaces in assigned zone.  Assist clients with scheduling, setup, and initial training on equipment usage and support procedures. Maintain the equipment inventory databases for equipment movement and regular maintenance records.
  • Troubleshoot existing systems by utilizing remote management systems (Screen Connect, Crestron E-Control, XiO, Fusion, etc.) recommending and performing the necessary repairs. Hardware may include digital projectors, amplifiers, speaker systems, microphones, cameras, computer systems, A/V control processors and interfaces and more. Work with local departmental support personnel to ensure timely support.
  • Advise the manager of departmental AV technology needs during the budget planning process and assess new equipment offered by A/V contractors and suppliers. Evaluate and make recommendations based on classroom technology usage, and client feedback. 
  • Support video teleconferencing equipment in assigned zone, or in other support zones as needed.  Support web conferencing needs for classes and individuals as necessary. Provide area administration and oversight of digital capture systems in assigned zone, including collecting capture permission forms, the timely schedule of events, and making necessary post-capture adjustments to the files.
  • General knowledge of Information Technology (IT) services, hardware, infrastructure and system architecture (IP, LAN, WAN, routers; network switches, hubs.)
  • Provide related IT support as required for classroom use of computer equipment, including basic adjustments to classroom and laptop computers, including image and sound adjustments as needed, in cooperation with TTS desktop computer support.
  • Promote good working relationships with the faculty and staff, and with local support personnel who provide event support within their departments.
  • Create, modify, and maintain programming for AV systems, including both back-end (coding) and front-end (GUI) projects.  Maintain up-to-date Crestron and Biamp programming software and modules, and provide firmware and/or software updates to installed equipment as needed to maintain proper operation.  Provide second-tier support to TTS integrated spaces as needed.  Pursue additional training as needed to maintain proficiency in programming environments.

 

 

EDUCATION

 

Required: BA/BS or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

 

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in information or instructional technologies or multimedia-related fields experience in support of educational media, media event support, or media integration.

 


EXPERIENCE

 

Required: Basic Crestron and Biamp programming skills, including creation and modification of SIMPL, VTPro, and Tesira programming files.  Must understand basic Crestron troubleshooting using Toolbox.
Must have hands-on experience in AV integrations, and be familiar with industry standards as well as fundamental trade skills including basic hand and power tools, ladders, etc. Certifications are a plus, such as from Chief, Biamp, Extron, Crestron, Vaddio, QSC, etc.  Experience with installing and commissioning of audiovisual systems is required. Significant experience not required if there is degree work in a related field, however, experience in technical support is highly preferred.  Experience with basic desktop computer support is very desirable.

 

Preferred: Experience in higher education and instructional technologies, particularly with integrated systems.  Experience with Crestron control systems, particularly control system coding and Crestron programming certification is highly desirable. Technician may receive Crestron certification training.  Experience with database management, specifically FileMaker Pro is desirable, as is familiarity with the MS Office suite of word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and communications software.  Experience with remote management tools is a plus.  Experience with networking is a plus.  Experience with web conferencing tools and video teleconferencing equipment is a plus.  Familiarity with both Mac and PC environments is preferred.

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

  • First shift; occasional evening and weekend hours required for some projects.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds, unpack equipment, and use basic hand-operated work tools to install and maintain equipment.
  • Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible.
  • Frequent bending, crouching, stooping
