Welcome to the Future of Work newsletter. Today we will focus on DIGITAL COLLABORATION.

The focus of digital collaboration in modern organizations is high-performing teams of people who attract other members to actively participate. These teams are formed to solve problems: to introduce a new product to the market, to optimize a process, to analyze market trends, to understand the needs and wants of customers, and so on.

Thanks to digital collaboration, it is not necessary to group employees by "location", but by the "problem" they are working to solve. Teams work through digital tools and communication platforms and use physical locations as needed, such as in the office, from home, on the road or in coworking spaces.

The challenge of digital collaboration is how best to engage people, how to use physical and digital workspaces, and how to meaningfully use modern communication technologies to achieve common goals. At the same time, this connection raises the need for how to properly define new ways of working and learn new skills, how to reconfigure workplaces and jobs, and how to choose the right technologies.

1. You need to get feedback from your employees. Find out WHY, HOW, WHEN, WHERE and WITH WHOM they do the work. Thanks to this, you will get an overview of what suits them, what suits them less and what does not suit them at all, and also WHAT they need for work: you get their real requirements, needs and wishes related to their work, and even involve them in changing the reconfiguration of workplaces.

2. There is a need to consider, through feedback, what challenges and work scenarios the physical and digital workspace must solve.

3. It is necessary to openly admit that some work needs to be done somewhere, but other work can be done anywhere.

The individual steps will guide us on how to set up a digital collaboration that will benefit everyone. To people who will have to be personally available at a specific place of work, but also to those who will be able to combine personal and remote presence (work hybridly) or to the last group who can work remotely from anywhere.

Digital collaboration also has its rules, e.g. weekly team meetings will always be personal, so that team members can foster mutual social relationships with each other or get to know new colleagues better.

Allowing people to collaborate from their preferred location is preferable to requiring a strict presence from a specific location such as an office. Such an approach will significantly support work-life balance, while enabling organizations to find new talent, engage more diverse and new ways of working in broader perspectives and create more creative and productive teams that achieve better results.

Next time we will focus on: HOW to successfully bring PEOPLE back to the office.

The world is changing and with it the ways of working, workspaces, technology and people. To learn more about the changing nature of work follow my work here or via LinkedIn.

Such thought-provoking piece @Jiří Plátek ! From your perspective, do you have any understanding on the impact to employer budgets for traditional office vs. deploying staff tech "anywhere?"

@Lisa Matthews, CTS It will be different in every organization. Why? Because it is about the effect of corporate culture. On purpose, why, how, what people want to achieve and change in the future of work. The future of work provides diversity, flexibility, variety in the way and scenarios of work. I don't have budget analysis available, but technology as a tool can significantly enhance human potential. To properly define the future of work, we need to understand where we have been, where we are now, where we will be and how we will get there. Once we understand this connection, we can use technology to implement the necessary changes.

@Jiří Plátek When it comes to digital collaboration, feedback is so important! Allowing for hybrid work and remote work has helped others to find jobs outside of location limits and can increase that sense of autonomy, but these are some important aspects to keep in mind with such work as well. While not everything can be done outside of an office, it really provides some freedom on things that don't always need you to come into the office for. Thank you for providing those infographics which break down the information in such a visual way. Can't wait to see your next post!

For example, you can look forward to a post about why you like your job and whether it is possible? How to achieve this and what role the human brain plays in it. Or why is it necessary to redefine, re-design, re-configure WORK?

Thanks for the response @Jiří Plátek ! I'm looking forward to seeing more of your posts as that all sounds really insightful. Love your bio also, especially the line "If all businesses are to be real businesses, then perhaps all offices should be studios."

@Iulia Popescu The sentence was created by simile. Imagine the naming of meeting rooms today. Most of the time, organizations name them half after the name of cities, half after the name of trees, after the name of colors.... I once thought why not name meeting rooms like atelier/studio, study room, library, laboratory

Atelier/studio - for creative work in a team
Study room - for focused work
Library - for meeting the community
Laboratory - for strategic meetings of cross teams

...

Each of these listed spaces must be properly designed: audio and video technology, furniture, acoustics, lighting... so that we can carry out the expected work scenarios in them.

How brilliant @Jiří Plátek ! I think a change like that could add a little light to a room. Words, names, spaces are all so powerful when it comes to creativity and collaboration. I've always loved the name of "Makerspaces" that I would see at universities. It just seemed like such a simple and inviting term. Inviting people to "come and just openly create in this space." Thank you for sharing!

I can see how a rename could add some vibrant energy to a room certainly!
